Overview
The Medication Competency Refresher Course at ABS College is designed for care workers, support workers, and other professionals involved in medication administration who need to renew their certification every 12 months. Delivered by experienced registered nurses, this course ensures that participants refresh their essential skills and knowledge required for safe and effective medication administration.
This course incorporates a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical training. Participants will engage in role-play activities, class discussions, case studies, and assessments to solidify their understanding of legislation, regulations, and workplace policies surrounding medication administration.
Before attending the face-to-face practical session, participants must complete the online theory components and assessments. This is a mandatory requirement; failure to do so will result in refusal of entry to the practical session.

Entry Requirements
- Prerequisite: Must have previously completed an accredited Medication Competency course.
- Online Theory Completion: Mandatory completion of online theory components and assessments prior to the practical session.
- Physical Capability: Participants must be able to participate in practical role-play activities

Theoretical Knowledge Includes:
Legislation and Regulations:
- Commonwealth and state/territory legislation regarding medication administration.
- Drugs and Poisons Act.
- Aged Care Act.
- Disability Services Acts.
Workplace Policies and Procedures:
- Work health and safety guidelines.
- Documentation and reporting requirements.
- Duty of care obligations.
Infection Control:
- Standard precautions.
- Additional precautions for infection prevention.
Program Learning Outcomes
Theoretical Knowledge:
- Understand relevant legislation and workplace policies regarding medication administration.
- Review the Drugs and Poisons Act, Aged Care Act, and Disability Services Acts.
- Learn about documentation requirements and duty of care.
- Reinforce infection control precautions.
Practical Skills:
- Assist in administering prescribed medications from dose administration aids (e.g., Webster Packs).
- Participate in providing and assisting with the distribution and administration of medications.
- Apply safe and correct procedures under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
Upon completion, participants will be classified as Medication Competent.
Assessments:
- Written Assessment: Complete an online assessment utilising our e-learning materials.
- Practical Assessment: Demonstrate your skills through hands-on practice in a supportive environment.

- Comfortable Clothing: Suitable for practical activities involving movement.
- Completed Assessments: Ensure you have completed and submitted all online theory assessments before attending.
Certification:
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a Certificate of Participation indicating you are Medication Competent. This certification is valid for 12 months.
